Workers Compensation

In Alberta, legal services is an exempt industry for the purposes of Workers Compensation. However, businesses in exempt industries can apply for voluntary coverage.

As the proprietor of a legal services business, you are not considered to be a worker of the firm for WCB purposes but you may voluntarily apply for personal optional protection.

If you obtain WCB coverage, then any injured workers are eligible for benefits, regardless of the cause of the injury sustained at work. In return for these benefits, workers give up the right to take legal action against you for work-related injuries and illnesses.

Note that there is a minimum premium of $200 for each WCB-Alberta account per calendar year so you can determine whether this option is financially viable for you knowing that the premium will be at least $200 per year.

For more information about WCB coverage, please visit the WCB website.
