2.2 Before You Start

According to Rules of the Law Society of Alberta, Rule 119.1, before you start your legal practice, you must either:

  1. Apply for and maintain the Responsible Lawyer designation and obtain authorization to operate a trust account; or
  2. Apply for an exemption from operating a trust account.

In order to become a Responsible Lawyer and operate a trust account, you must complete the Responsible Lawyer Course. Contact Trust Safety to arrange to take this course. You must allow time to register for this online course, complete the coursework, and be approved by the Trust Safety department. This process can take two to three weeks.

Within four months of opening your new practice, you must complete and file a Start-Up Report, prepared by an independent accountant that you have retained.
