Before moving into the next section, take a moment to consider, at a high level, what you want your firm to look like. If this is the first time you’ve considered starting your own firm, you can brainstorm and jot down ideas, thoughts and questions in point form, which you can continue to develop as you go through the rest of this course.

If you’ve been dreaming about starting your firm for a while, you might have a better idea of what your ideal firm looks like. If this sounds like you, think about drafting a more detailed description of your firm.

Here is an example of a firm description for a new law firm:

In the heart of [my community], I will provide dedicated legal services through my own family law practice. I am driven by a passion for supporting those in need, and helping people resolve their issues so they can move on to a new chapter of their lives.

My practice will begin modestly. For the first few years, I plan to work alone, with a part-time assistant to help manage administrative tasks. This setup will allow me to efficiently handle a steady stream of Legal Aid cases, offering essential services to clients who may otherwise struggle to access legal services. The intimate nature of my firm ensures personalized attention to each case, while my assistant's support enables me to focus on legal matters.

As my firm gains a foothold in the market and my reputation grows, my vision for the firm will develop. My initial focus on Legal Aid cases will serve as a stepping-stone to more lucrative family law engagements. However, giving back to my community is important to me, and I will always make sure I am doing some work pro bono.

I plan to remain a sole practitioner for the foreseeable future because I value the autonomy and the direct client interaction that comes with it. However, I aspire to grow my firm over time, potentially bringing in additional support staff and, one day, other lawyers to create a collaborative and dynamic environment that still values work-life balance. I’ve always enjoyed lending other people a hand, and I see myself, with a few more years of experience under my belt, bringing on an articling student and providing mentorship to junior lawyers.

Everyone says that technology is revolutionizing the way we practice law, and I plan to be on the cutting edge. I will take advantage of emerging technology to meet my clients’ needs in an innovative and efficient way. For example, I want to use virtual consultations to access clients in different areas of my community – and maybe even across the province. This will make it easier for my clients to meet with me and is particularly beneficial for clients with mobility issues or those located outside my community.

I also want to use advanced document management systems to help me organize, store and retrieve legal documents efficiently, as well as e-discovery tools to automate the process of finding and analyzing electronic evidence. I would also like to explore developing a secure client portal where clients can access case information, upload documents and communicate directly with me. Finally, I want to learn about how I can use AI to supplement my knowledge, through tools such as contract analysis, predictive analytics and document drafting. By leveraging AI, I can enhance my decision-making process, forecast case outcomes and generate tailored legal documents more efficiently.

My ideal clients are individuals and families navigating the challenging landscape of family law. These clients seek not only my legal expertise but also compassionate guidance during what is often a tumultuous time in their lives. I aim to attract my clients through community outreach, partnerships with local organizations and a strong online presence that highlights my firm’s commitment to achieving effective results and resolving conflict. By identifying and serving these clients, my firm will be seen as a trusted and innovative leader in the field of family law, ready to meet the evolving needs of my community.

As you go through the rest of the course, you can add to your plan, considering the information discussed in following sections and filling in your business plan as you go.
