7.1
Introduction and Objectives

Over the last several years there has been a significant increase in parties representing themselves in legal matters. Lawyers must adapt to the reality that in many situations the opposing party will have little to no legal knowledge and experience with the legal system. This module provides information to assist lawyers in developing best practices when the opposing party is self-represented.

The objectives of this module are:

  • To learn about your duties when dealing with a self-represented party (SRP).
  • To  learn how to resolve matters with SRPs efficiently and fairly.
  • To learn practice tips and strategies to minimize your stress when managing matters with SRPs in litigation.
  • To learn strategies to avoid complaints to the Law Society.

This module is not a substitute for exercising professional judgment and does not constitute legal advice.
